THE LETTERING WORKBENCH

A little structure.
A lot of possibility.

Set your proportions. Make your guides.
Then let your own handwriting take over.

01 / Paper & print

Ruler reserves 12 mm below the drawing area. Your printer may need wider margins.

Your setup, ready next time.

YOUR SHEET

Practice paper

BaselineX-height / guideScreen preview fits the page; it is not life-size.

    FROM SCREEN TO PAPER

    Make your first sheet.

    1

    Choose your space

Set the paper to match your printer. For cards and envelopes, enter the dimensions of the flat surface you plan to letter. The outline is centered on the sheet; it is not a folding or postage template.

    2

    Set your rhythm

Practice x-height = nib width × nib count. Ascenders and descenders are multiples of that x-height. On circles, the darker inner arc is the baseline; letter height extends outward.

    3

    Print, measure, begin

Download the vector PDF, choose Actual size, and check the ruler. Use a guide behind translucent paper or transfer marks carefully. A template cannot show through dark, opaque stock.

    GOOD TO KNOW

    A few practical notes.

    How are slant angles measured?

The angle is measured up from a horizontal baseline: 90° is vertical. A 55° right slant rises to the right, 35° from vertical. Left slant is its exact horizontal mirror. “Both” overlays the two directions; at 90° they coincide.

How do the circular guides work?

Angles run clockwise around the page: 0° at the right, 90° at the bottom, 180° at the left, 270° at the top. Start must be less than end; use Full circle for 360°. Radius is measured from the center cross to the first dark baseline. Ring spacing is baseline to baseline.

Write along the dark baseline with letter tops toward the outer light arc. Lower semicircle letters may appear inverted when read around the circle. These are geometric guides, not automatically shaped text or a word-spacing solver.

Will planning text match my lettering?

No. Optional card text is a plain fixed-width planning aid using your browser’s monospace face and standard PDF Courier. It is not a calligraphy font or handwriting measurement. Text that exceeds the block is flagged and omitted, never shrunk silently. Measure your own lettering for final centering.

    Why are some settings rejected?

The page must contain the full geometry inside the margins. X-height on practice sheets must be at least 1 mm, slant spacing at least 2 mm, and ring / baseline spacing at least x-height + 1 mm. Limits keep sheets readable and generation responsive.

    Which file should I use?

PDF preserves page size and is the recommended print file. SVG is a vector drawing for editing or cutting workflows; check the imported millimetre dimensions because some apps reinterpret SVG units. No cutting or printer operation has been tested.

    LOCAL BY DESIGN

    Your words stay with you.

Paper geometry and optional text are processed in your browser. This app sends no text or settings to a server, uses no analytics, ads, remote fonts, or paid APIs, and does not collect mailing information.

Only “Save locally” writes settings to browser storage. Text is excluded from saved and exported settings. PDF and SVG downloads can contain text when you enable it. Clear the text before sharing those files. The hosting service may keep normal access logs and, on this private deployment, handles sign-in.

“Forget saved” removes this app’s saved settings. “Reset this tool” resets its current settings. There is no cloud backup.
